Talaya Schmid

Colorful and fluffy tufted carpets break with stereotypes of the female. Talaya Schmid’s soft sculptures are a warmhearted reappropriation of the view of the vulva as an animating, life-affirming, and empowering organ. They frequently serve the artist as props in performances and thus become relicts. Talaya Schmid intentionally utilizes her body in videos and actions. The Zurich-based artist interrogates popular pictures of female sexuality. Inspired and influenced by Annie Sprinkle, she has become part of a series of sex-positive feminists. Talaya Schmid studied at Goldsmiths University of London and has won numerous prizes and stipends. Her works have been exhibited several times at the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Helmhaus Zürich, the Haus Konstruktiv, the Swiss Art Award in Basel, the Dokumenta 14 in Kassel, and the Salon international d’art contemporain in Marseille. Talaya Schmid is represented in numerous private and medical art collections.
