Subtle shifts in prosaic reality—in large-format analogue photographs as well as in sculptures and installations, Jonas Burkhalter examines the existing world and renders it as an aesthetic space in which familiar experiences are distorted poetically. His conceptual photography of cities and landscapes is inspired by the New Objectivity of the Becher school, but also by Alec South’s portraits; it often undergoes a confrontational expansion in wall and three-dimensional objects.
Since obtaining his master of fine arts at the Hochschule Luzern, Burkhalter’s work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions throughout Switzerland, hence, for instance, at the Kunstmuseum Luzern, the Museum zu Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen, the Kunsthaus Pasquart in Biel, or the Helmhaus Zürich. His work has been supported several times with prestigious grants, for example, with studio stipends from the City of Zurich and the Canton of Zug, or the Aeschlimann Corti-Stipendium. Jonas Burkhalter’s works are represented in the Canton of Zug Art Collection and numerous private collections.
