Janet Mueller

The irrepressible painting of Janet Mueller gives rise to works that are as powerful as they are highly sensitive. In a process of applying and removing paint, concrete, figurative, and typographical elements are fused together to create a vivid personal pictorial language that brings together surrealistic automatisms and neo-Expressionist expression, and is at times reminiscent of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Her pictures, installations, and actions negotiate the intuitive, gestural, and process-oriented qualities in the act of painting and unrelentingly address directness, incompleteness, and questions of identity. 

Mueller engages in lively exhibition activities: her works have been shown at the Helmhaus Zürich, the Kunstzeughaus Rapperswil, and the Fundaziun Nairs Scuol, among other venues, as well as in art exhibitions with Lutz & Guggisberg, Eric Hattan, or huber.huber. In 2026, the Museum Bickel in Walenstadt presented Mueller’s first solo museum exhibition. Janet Mueller’s works are part of numerous private and public art collections, for instance of the City of Zurich or the Swiss National Bank.
